Frequently asked

Questions, answered properly.

If you read one section, make it book labor time. It explains why two quotes for the same repair can look completely different and neither one is wrong.

General questions

What is Critter Performance & Automotive?

A mobile automotive repair business based in Tyler, Texas, serving East Texas. We bring diagnostic equipment and tools to wherever your vehicle is — your driveway, your workplace parking lot, or the shoulder where it stopped — and do the repair there.

Do you have a shop I can bring my vehicle to?

We come to you. That is the whole model. It means no tow bill, no ride to arrange, and no leaving your vehicle overnight for a job that takes two hours.

What kinds of vehicles do you work on?

Cars, trucks and SUVs, domestic and import, including older and classic vehicles. If you are unsure whether your vehicle is a fit, send a request with the year, make and model and we will tell you honestly before scheduling.

Are there jobs you don't take?

Some repairs need a lift, a press, machining, alignment equipment or a controlled environment — internal engine and transmission work, tire mounting and balancing, and body and paint are the common examples. If your repair is one of those, we will say so and point you toward the right shop rather than starting something we can't finish in your driveway.

Mobile service

My vehicle won't make it to a shop. Can you still help?

That is exactly the situation mobile service exists for. A no-start, a dead battery, a brake problem you don't want to drive on — tell us where it is and whether it is driveable when you submit the request, and we plan around it.

What do you need from me at the appointment?

A reasonably level, safe place to work with room to open doors and get around the vehicle, and the keys. A driveway, carport or parking space is ideal. You do not need to be present the whole time, but we do need to reach you before any additional work is authorised.

Can you work in an apartment complex or business parking lot?

Usually, but check with your property manager or employer first — some prohibit it. Roadside work depends on the location; a shoulder on a busy highway may need to be moved before it is safe to work.

What if it rains?

Light rain under cover is workable. Heavy weather, lightning or standing water is not safe for electrical or brake work, and we will call you to reschedule rather than rush a repair you depend on.

Scheduling

How do I book an appointment?

Submit the service request form on any page, or call or text 903-491-7331. The form takes about two minutes and gets us the vehicle details, the location and the symptoms, which means the first call back is about scheduling rather than twenty questions.

How quickly will I hear back?

We respond to every request we receive. Response time depends on where we are in the day — if you are broken down and need an answer now, call rather than submit the form.

What are your hours?

Monday to Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Weekend appointments are by arrangement. So that each customer gets the attention they deserve, we normally take just one appointment per weekend day. Call or text 903-491-7331 and we will get back to you.

Do you charge for a missed appointment?

If you need to reschedule, let us know as early as you can. Appointments outside the fifteen-mile radius may carry a Service Area Reservation Fee, which is described in its own section below.

Book labor time

The single most common source of confusion in automotive repair, and worth reading before you compare quotes.

What is book labor time?

Book labor is a published, standardised estimate of how long a specific repair takes on a specific vehicle. It comes from labor guides that the whole industry uses, built from manufacturer data and time studies. When you get a quote for '2.4 hours' on a water pump, that 2.4 is the book time for your year, make, model and engine — not a guess, and not a stopwatch reading.

Why don't labor hours equal clock hours?

Because you are paying for the job, not for the minutes. Book time is the same number whether the technician is fast or slow, whether a bolt snaps, or whether it takes three trips to get to the part. Sometimes a job beats book time. Sometimes a seized bolt turns a two-hour job into four. Billing by the clock would mean you pay more when things go badly and pay for someone else's inexperience — book time is what makes a quote a quote.

Why is the same repair more hours on my vehicle than my neighbour's?

Access. Two vehicles can use the same part and have wildly different book times because one has the component at the front of the engine and the other has it buried behind a subframe. This is also why a quote given over the phone without the exact year, engine and drivetrain is not worth much.

Do you ever charge more than book time?

Only with your approval, and only when something genuinely outside the job appears — a broken bleeder, rusted hardware, a previous repair done wrong. You get told before the extra work happens, not on the invoice afterwards.

Can I see the book time on my estimate?

Yes. Labor lines on our estimates and invoices show the book hours we quoted from, so you can see exactly what you are being billed for and compare it anywhere else.

Pricing and payment

How does pricing work?

Parts plus labor, with labor based on published book time for your vehicle. You receive a written estimate before repair work begins, itemised into parts and labor with the applicable tax shown separately. No work beyond what you approved happens without a call.

What is your labor rate?

Rates are confirmed on your written estimate for your specific vehicle and repair.

Do you charge a diagnostic fee?

Yes — $100, which is the same as one hour of labor. If you have us complete the repair, that $100 is applied directly toward the labor for your repair. So if the job books 1.5 hours of labor, you pay for the remaining 0.5 hour, because the first hour is already covered by the diagnostic fee.

Can I supply my own parts?

Ask when you book. Customer-supplied parts change what can be warrantied and occasionally turn a one-visit job into two when the part is wrong, so it is a conversation rather than a flat yes or no.

How do I pay?

Payment methods are confirmed on your invoice. We do not store card details — any card payment goes through the processor's own secure checkout page.

Diagnostics

The parts store read my codes for free. Isn't that the same thing?

No, and this is where a lot of money gets wasted. A code identifies a circuit or a symptom the computer noticed — P0171 means the engine is running lean, not 'replace the oxygen sensor'. That lean condition could be a vacuum leak, a fuel pump, a dirty mass airflow sensor or a cracked intake boot. Diagnosis is the work of finding out which.

Can you do full diagnostics as a mobile service?

Yes. Scan tools, live data, meters and pressure testing all travel. The limitation is not the equipment — it is repairs that need a lift or machining, which is a separate question from finding the fault.

My problem only happens sometimes. Is that a problem?

It makes it harder, not impossible, and it is a good reason to use a mobile technician — we can see the vehicle in the condition and location where the fault actually occurs instead of trying to reproduce it in a bay. Tell us in the request when and how it happens: cold start, after an hour of driving, only in the rain. Those details matter more than people expect.

Maintenance

Why do routine oil changes matter so much?

Oil does four jobs — lubricates, cools, cleans and seals — and it loses the ability to do all four as it breaks down and fills with combustion by-products. Modern engines have tight tolerances, variable valve timing solenoids and turbochargers that all depend on clean oil moving through small passages. Neglected oil turns to sludge, blocks those passages, and turns a routine service into an engine repair.

How often should I actually change my oil?

Follow the interval in your owner's manual for your driving conditions, and take the severe-service schedule seriously if you do short trips, tow, idle a lot or drive in East Texas summer heat — that describes most people here. If your vehicle has an oil life monitor, it is generally more accurate than a sticker on the windshield.

What does a cabin air filter do, and does it matter?

It filters the air coming into the passenger compartment through your vents. It is one of the most commonly neglected items on a vehicle, and a clogged one restricts airflow, makes the A/C work harder and is usually the source of a musty smell. On most vehicles it lives behind the glovebox and takes about ten minutes.

What maintenance is worth doing and what is an upsell?

Ask us for the manufacturer's schedule for your mileage and we will tell you what is genuinely due. Fluids, filters, plugs and belts on interval are worth every dollar. A flush that is not in the manual and not indicated by a condition on your vehicle usually is not.

Brake service

Can brake work really be done in my driveway?

Yes — pads, rotors, calipers, hoses and hydraulics are all standard mobile work on a level surface. Brakes are the repair people most often ask about, and the one we are strictest about doing properly.

How do I know when my brakes need service?

Squealing or grinding, a pedal that feels soft or sinks, a shake through the wheel when you stop, or the vehicle pulling to one side. Grinding means the friction material is gone and you are cutting into the rotor — that one is not worth waiting on.

Do rotors always have to be replaced?

No. Rotors get measured against the manufacturer's minimum thickness and checked for runout and cracking. If they are within spec and in good condition, they stay. We will show you the measurement.

Why did my last brake job only last a year?

Most often seized caliper slide pins or torn boots that were not addressed when the pads went in, so one pad does most of the work and wears out early. Hardware and slides are part of doing the job, not an add-on.

Oil changes

What oil do you use?

Whatever specification your engine calls for — the correct viscosity and the manufacturer approval listed in your manual. Using a cheaper grade because it is on the shelf is how variable valve timing systems and turbochargers get damaged.

How long does a mobile oil change take?

Typically under half an hour, plus a look over the rest of the vehicle while we are under it. We take the used oil and filter with us for recycling.

Can you do it at my office?

Often, as long as the parking situation allows it and your employer is fine with it. Plenty of people book service for while they are at work.

Electrical

My battery keeps dying but the battery tests fine. What's going on?

Usually a parasitic draw — something staying awake and drawing current after the vehicle is shut down. Finding it means measuring the draw and then pulling fuses one at a time to isolate the circuit. It is patient work, and it is a great deal cheaper than the third battery.

Can you fix wiring rather than replacing the whole harness?

Usually, yes. Chafed sections, corroded connectors, bad grounds and previous repairs done with twisted wire and tape can be repaired properly at the wire. Full harness replacement is a last resort.

Do you do trailer wiring and lighting?

Yes — connector replacement, trailer plug troubleshooting and lighting circuits are common jobs.

Service Area Reservation Fee

What is the Service Area Reservation Fee?

Appointments beyond 15 miles from Downtown Tyler may require a non-refundable Service Area Reservation Fee. If repairs are completed, the reservation fee is fully credited toward the final repair invoice.

Why does it exist?

A long-distance appointment is a block of the day that cannot be given to anyone else. The fee reserves that block. If the repair goes ahead, it costs you nothing extra — it comes straight off the invoice.

When does it get credited back?

In full, against the final repair invoice, when repairs are completed. It shows as its own line so you can see the credit applied.

How much is it?

It depends on distance, and it is confirmed with you before you commit to the appointment. You will never be surprised by it — you have to acknowledge it on the request form before you can submit.

Does it apply to me?

Only if your location is more than fifteen miles from Downtown Tyler. Tyler, Flint and Whitehouse are inside that radius; Longview, Athens and Paris are outside it.

Service area

Where do you travel?

Across East Texas, centred on Tyler — including Flint, Whitehouse, Lindale, Bullard, Longview, Kilgore, Henderson, Gilmer, Athens, Mabank and Paris.

My town isn't on the list. Can you still come?

Ask. The listed communities are where we work most often, not a boundary. Send a request with your address and we will tell you whether we can get there and what it involves.

Do you go further for larger jobs?

Often, yes. Distance matters less when the job is a full day's work than when it is a thirty-minute service.

Warranty

Do you warranty your work?

Warranty terms for parts and labor are being finalised and will be published here in full. In the meantime, the terms that apply to your repair are stated on your written estimate before you approve it.

What about parts warranties?

Parts carry the manufacturer's warranty, which varies by part and supplier. The applicable coverage is noted on your estimate.
